Question

Unfortunately there has been some negative publicity about the Coulsdon by-pass with traffic snarl-ups. Surprisingly, the project manager for the contractor has been quoted in the local Croydon press saying: " Hochtief simply built the road and did not design it." " As we have been working we have built two new roundabouts and there was a consideration the junction that is causing the problems is a roundabout." "It could have been done differently, but I don't think anyone identified this particular junction would have caused the problem."

Will the roundabout junctions be adjusted to improve traffic flows?

The two roundabout junctions comply with current design standards, which take account of local traffic conditions, physical constraints and the operational and safety needs of all road users. As is TfL's normal practice, a post implementation safety audit and an operational review will be undertaken once traffic patterns are more stable, and any issues identified will be addressed appropriately within the locational constraints. On the whole, the scheme is operating very effectively, achieving its primary objective to relieve Coulsdon Town Centre of endless congestion.
