The primary aim of the scheme was to remove through traffic from Coulsdon town centre and this is being achieved ' to have increased capacity significantly would have served only to exacerbate problems downstream at Purley. Since the opening of the Coulsdon Relief Road on the 18 December 2006, there has been a noticeable reduction in through traffic using Brighton Road in Coulsdon. In the first few days following its opening, traffic delays occurred on the new road during peak times. This was expected as drivers become familiar with and adjusted to the new situation. It will take a little time for traffic patterns to stabilise. Meanwhile, the situation is being monitored.
