Will the Metropolitan Police, the Government or the organisers of the DSEI arms fair at Excel be paying for the £4m policing costs? Has the cost of policing the arms fair been budgeted for within the Metropolitan Police and would it be far more sensible to ban the event and use the money to save lives by expanding the number of traffic police in London?

The Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) will cover the costs of policing at the DSEI arms fair. This cost will be met from the MPS 07/08 budget. Neither the GLA nor the MPS has the jurisdiction to ban the fair.As I have said publicly over the last 5 years, it is unacceptable that MPS resource is being diverted to police this event. The cost of policing this event should be borne by the event organisers. I would like to see the Government look seriously at converting our arms production into other uses, rather than arming those with no regard to human life
