Question

Section 3.4 of 'The Walking Plan for London' (February 2004, p.27) states that "[a] walkability index is being developed in order to assess London's walkability against other cities." Has this walkability index been developed? If so, where does London rank on the index? If not, how will headline target (c) "to increase the level of London's walkability2 (ibid, February 2004, p.26, section 3.2) be measured?

A draft methodology has been developed to produce a walkability index, which has been trialled in an area around Waterloo Station. Although this work was completed successfully, further work is required to determine whether the measure should be used London-wide, and how the measure can be made compatible with the Pedestrian Environment Review System.
