Question

I'm sure that you are concerned as I am about the two recent deaths of motorcyclists along the Telford Road section of the A406 North Circular. Could the Telford Road widening to two lanes each way and associated safety measures be brought forward as a separate project prior to the larger set of works (expected to be finished by 2010)?

The circumstances of the accidents are currently the subject of a Coroner's inquiry, which will formally determine the cause. However, TfL understand that it is unlikely that the accidents would have been prevented by the A406 Safety and Environmental Improvement Scheme at Bounds Green, which is presently the subject of a planning application to Enfield and Haringey Councils. Nevertheless, the section of the A406 North Circular Road covered by the scheme has an unacceptably high level of accidents, which should reduce by about one third when the scheme is implemented. The scheme, which is scheduled for completion in 2011, will provide pedestrian crossings and anti-skid surfacing at junctions, dedicated cycle routes, as well as significant improvements to the local streetscene. When planning permission is granted, TfL will proceed as quickly as possible to construction, and will consider which parts of the works to undertake as a matter of priority.
