Question

I cannot help but notice Val Shawcross' question which follows this, on CCTV footage. Are you happy that people are working integratedly across the transport system, to provide this safe system? I get reports also from my constituents that they are fearful of using the night buses because of the crime and the sheer atmosphere, and I get that from youngsters.

I think that when we had a more limited and less frequent night bus service, it was quite scary, and a lot of people would not use it. Now it is much more reliable. Many more people are using it, and it is that critical mass; People are not so concerned if they get on a bus and there are several other people. They might be concerned if they get on the bus and there is someone off their medication on the top deck, screaming and ranting. Again and again, I make the point that when you are on the bus or on the Tube, you are most probably in one of the safest places in London, in terms of the incidence of crime. People often worry about people with slightly eccentric behaviour, and perhaps London has more than its fair share of people with slightly eccentric behaviour, but that seldom spills over into violence.
