Homeless charity Centrepoint states that the true face of homelessness is three times more likely to involve someone from a BME background and that 72 per cent of its service users are from BME backgrounds. How can London's local authorities work with the GLA to tackle this issue?

I am responding to the disproportionate level of BME homelessness in a number of ways. The GLA has ensured that the needs of equalities groups have been central to the development of the current London Housing Strategy and the London Housing Advice Strategy. I have increased targets within the current programme for 35 per cent of social homes to have three or more bedrooms to meet the housing needs of larger families in need (predominantly from BME communities), set targets for the proportion of new housing allocated to BME communities and set targets for the proportion of development funding given to BME led housing associations. I am also, through my Economic Development Strategy, the work of the LDA and initiatives such as the Board for Refugee Integration in London, tackling the wider causes of social exclusion that contribute to BME homelessness. I will continue to work with London's local authorities to tackle homelessness among BME communities through my current targets and initiatives, and through my forthcoming Housing Strategy.
