Question

It appears to Lambeth residents that the 59 bus route [Streatham Hill-Euston] operates less frequently than other routes in the area and is consequently the most overcrowded. Does this perception from residents have any basis in fact, and if so, what can be done to improve the frequency on this particular route?

Answer

The frequency of the 59 is well matched to demand. A recent review - examining the route's capacity, reliability and structure - did not identify any significant issues. Of course, in common with all services, individual buses at the busiest times can be full and passengers may not always be able to board the first bus. Service levels were improved significantly on the 59 in 2003, when Monday to Saturday daytime frequencies were increased by 50%. More recently, 3 extra journeys were added in the morning peak. Since 2003 both service provision and passenger numbers have increased by about 45%.
