TfL estimates that 200 million litres of diesel fuel is used a year across the London bus network and that Dial-a-Ride uses 1.1 million litres. These fleets are by far the largest users of fuel in TfL. Information showing consumption of fuel in other TfL operations is being collected this summer as part of TfL's annual environmental reporting process.

TfL has previously conducted emissions testing work on biodiesel blends, and TfL is planning to undertake further emissions testing work of biodiesel to further evaluate the environmental benefits, and will certainly pursue its use if it proves positive.

The Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation recently announced by Government is also likely to result in fuel companies adding a proportion of biodiesel to standard diesel sales of up to five per cent. National incentives are likely to result in a general uptake of biodiesel across UK fleets.
