The complete interceptor sewer project cannot be delivered prior to the Olympics. This has been known since before the award of the Games. However, options to relieve the two overflows in the vicinity of the Olympics (Abbey Mills and Wick Lane) could potentially be delivered as long as construction starts by late 2007. This assumes a rapid planning and detailed engineering phase which is very challenging to deliver in itself and leaves a tight timescale for implementation of the Olympics/Lee Valley element of the project.

Given these very tight delivery timeframes it will be sensible to consider any necessary temporary measures that may be required for the duration of the Olympic and Paralympic Games. The Government is currently assessing a number of contingency measures. All of this still awaits the Government's final decision on the interceptor tunnel which as you know I have argued for and about which I expect to hear more over the next couple of months.
