TfL hopes to introduce smart ticketing on the North London Railway franchise by the end of 2007 to coincide with the start of the new TfL franchise and to begin rolling Oyster out across the remaining National Rail services in London during 2008.

This wider roll-out is subject to the Operators accepting TfL's latest offer to part-fund Oyster. However, the new South West Trains franchise is required to introduce smartcard ticketing by January 2009.

We hope to have smart ticketing agreed and implemented as soon as practicable, depending on the close cooperation of the Train Operating Companies.

In this context the introduction of zonal fares in 2007 is timely and a hopeful sign of a commitment by the Train Operators and DfT to expedite the move to smart ticketing on all National Rail service in London.
