The TfL website states that one of the two objectives of the proposed Low Emission Zone is to move London closer "to achieving national and EU air quality objectives for 2010". Is there any difference between national air quality objectives and those stipulated by the EU?

National air quality objectives are set with reference to European Union limit values for certain pollutants, though the dates for achieving these limit dates can differ from European Union indicative target dates. The table below sets out United Kingdom Air Quality objectives and European Union Limit Values. TfL is working towards meeting these air quality objectives.

London needs to show progress in working towards meeting EU limit values. The LEZ is one means to show such progress, as well as achieving health benefits through improved air quality for people who live in and work in London.
