Peter Hendy (Commissioner, Transport for London)

The current Congestion Charging computer systems, camera infrastructure, and scheme configuration were not designed for charges that vary over the course of the day.

However, we are currently conducting trials of various technologies which could enable variable charging, as well as an automated payment system, and assessing the impacts of such charges.

TfL is due to re-let the operational contracts of Congestion Charging in 2009/10 and this provides an appropriate opportunity to introduce such new systems.
