a) Only Authorised Firearms Officers (AFO) are trained in the use of Taser. They will have undergone an intensive firearms course before being authorised to carry firearms. Once authorised, they will undertake a 1 day course on the use of Taser. b) The MPS has also informed me that through Exemption 31 (whereby disclosure would hamper future operations) they are not at liberty to give me information as to why tasers have been used. In relation to use of Tasers, a trial ran from 21/04/03 to 21/0During these trials the taser have been used 31 times. Post trial to 01/03/05 the taser was used 28 times. The breakdown for use by borough is as follows:i) During Trial - Hounslow / Brent / Wandsworth / Hammersmith & Fulham / Croydon/ Enfield / Ealing.ii) Post Trial - Hammersmith & Fulham / Hounslow / Kent/ Kingston Upon Thames/ Lambeth / Kensington & Chelsea / Waltham Forest / Redbridge/ Hillingdon/ Nottinghamshire / Newham / Hackney / Kensington & Chelsea/ Southwark / Merton / Haringey / Haveringc) No incidents have resulted in deaths. Injuries caused have been limited to the barbs piercing the skin. These are only removed by suitably qualified professionals. d) All use of the Taser is investigated by the D.P.S. To date there has been 1 recorded public complaint. e) All of these incidents would have been previously attended by SO19 as they are all under the heading of "armed or otherwise so dangerous".4/04.
