Question

Quotas are now being discussed politically. Hazel Blears (Minister of State for Crime Reduction, Policing, Community Safety and Counter-Terrorism) has talked about positive discrimination; indeed a whole range of people have talked about positive discrimination. Do you think that there should be whole, visibly ethnic minority intakes to Hendon? If you are against quotas, are you also against positive discrimination?

Yes, I have never said I support positive discrimination. I think it is wrong. It is wrong in law. It is an impossible case to defend to the people who lose out. You create a different set of victims. I talk about positive action to end discrimination. In all my years in public life, no black person or woman ever came to me to ask for positive discrimination. They came and asked for the discrimination against them to be removed. They never asked for special pleading with the exception of a couple of politicians but they are in a separate category. Ordinary members of the public just want the chance to achieve their potential.
