Question

Now that the Government have again rejected the idea of funding the A406 expansion to six lanes, will you return to your original decision that this scheme would "generate further traffic, be delivered at a very high cost, require a public inquiry and take many years to complete"? Will you now act to end the decay caused by over twelve years of delay and indecision by acting upon your decision and selling off the TfL owned properties along the safeguarded route?

Answer

The Spending Review 2004 did not provide full funding for the major A406 schemes inherited from the Highways Agency and this is not being taken forward in the TfL Business Plan. The TfL Board will shortly be asked to approve the recommendation that a smaller scale safety and environmental scheme be progressed at Bounds Green. This would be similar to that submitted for consultation in 2002 but with an updated design to make better provision for buses, pedestrians, cyclists and environmental treatment. The Board will also be asked to endorse revised safeguarding to remove uncertainty regarding the property along the route. As an integral part of updating the footprint of the scheme, the property disposal plan is also being amended. Subject to TfL Board approval, the surplus property will be sold during the TfL plan period.
