The personal safety of children is a high priority for TfL. The use of alternative modes to access schools does not mean that journeys can not be escorted. Indeed the walking bus programme seeks to encourage parents to escort children to school on foot by enabling them to share that commitment with other local parents. This scheme is also being looked at in terms of escorted cycle rides.Issues such as criminal records checks are being looked at as part of formalised car share schemes for schools and clusters of schools and many parents accompany their children on public transport. For those children travelling unescorted, TfL are providing a programme of Safer Routes to School. This combines education and engineering to improve the local facilities for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users, and local safety schemes that provide walking and cycle training as well as dealing with accident black spots. .
