Question

Manchester Free Transport: you replied to 1405/2003 that there are no specific lessons for London from this initiative. The underlying issue is about private sponsorship of the services. Are there not examples in London where private or third party support has been secured for a service and are there any circumstances in which you would support a free bus service supported by sponsors, particularly if positive economic or environmental benefits could be demonstrated?

London Buses is very active in pursuing private or third party funding. Sponsorship of this kind is generally for specific service extensions or frequency enhancements to serve new developments such as shopping centres or new housing. The funding normally comes from private developers via the council as part of the planning permission process. .
