Question

I am always pleased, Mr Mayor, when you talk so positively about Tramlink PFI, the result of the work of Steven Norris and a Conservative council that put the PFI in place. The question I would like to ask is related to the tram that Sam asked earlier and also is related to the issue of what the flexibility is like in allocating the officers between the established routes and bus routes that are facing difficulties. Whenever I have spoken to you, you have always been very positive about intervening on the issue of the stoning of T31 bus in New Addington. It seems to me in terms of responses that I actually get from TfL that you are frustrated in that desire to help. Although the local police are now trying to do something, it seems that it is impossible, despite what you might want to do, to actually get officers on that bus system to try to stop the stoning of the bus, which means often, as you have heard from residents in New Addington, that the service gets suspended.

The 50% increase in staffing by the unit, which will take it to 900, and the increased mobility I initially, when we started out on this, thought we would do the first 10% of routes and then another 10%. Rather than wait for that, which will take forever, you need a mobile capacity in this so that where you get a particular problem like New Addington, resources can be diverted to that until you have broken the back of the problem. The mobility part of this, plus it is particularly important now to extend to cover the night buses and does mean that we should have that flexibility that will not be quite the frustration of having had people so tied to individual routes that we did not have that capacity to switch resources short of an intervention from me and the Assembly members concerned.
