Question

In response to my lobbying, you have promised to intervene to get Bus Marshals on T31 buses. In reply to me you have said Although the operator of the T31 service has stated that there is no pattern to the attacks on these buses, TfL is looking to improve the safety on these buses and will feedback any developments. Have there been any developments and will we see Bus Marshals on this route?

I have taken your reference to `bus marshals' to mean the Metropolitan Police Officers attached to the Transport Operational Command Unit (TOCU). As you are aware, the TOCU has undertaken some partnership activities on the estate to address the issue of stone throwing. The local MPS Borough Police are aware of the situation in New Addington and it will continue to be monitored for any recurring problems. The deployment of the TOCU officers, who are primarily based on 20 key bus corridors, is based on intelligence information from a variety of sources. The units are tasked on a priority basis at the operational discretion of the TOCU commander, to best achieve the objectives. Although route T31 is not one of the key corridors, if our incident monitoring shows high levels of criminal or anti-social behaviour then they will be targeted by the TOCU as part of day to day operations. In addition, my 2003/04 budget allows the TOCU to almost double in size. Over a 100 of these new officers will work on an area basis to deal with these types of issues and their deployment will be intelligence led. The issues relating to the T31 will continue to be monitored as part of this process. .
