Question

Despite the safety measures on the A2 Bexleyheath, there appears to be a continuing problem with speeding. At what speed are drivers prosecuted on this stretch of road and could you provide me with information on the numbers caught going above both the official speed limit of 50mph and the set speed for the cameras to trigger a fine?

The speed above which drivers are prosecuted and the setting of speed camera thresholds are operational matters for the Metropolitan Police. For obvious reasons, details are not made public. While the police statistics for speeding offences are not publicly available, TfL's ongoing vehicle monitoring initiative in this area, Project Ridgeway, (carried out in partnership with the Metropolitan Police Service) has shown that over the last six months speeds on the A2 in the Bexleyheath area have reduced. It is important to realise that the success of safety cameras is measured not in the number of prosecutions, but in the reduction of numbers of casualties. Using the three year period before and after cameras were installed as a measure, speed cameras in the Bexleyheath area have achieved a 58% reduction in casualties. .
