Last year I introduced my Bonus for bus drivers and conductors and in recent years annual pay rises have been considerably in excess of inflation. In 2002, the settlements were generally around 6-7%. Together this has meant a significant increase in pay for bus drivers and conductors. In addition, many bus operators have improved terms and conditions for bus staff, for example, by reducing the number of rostered hours worked each week.Initiatives to improve safety include on-board CCTV and the introduction of the Transport Operational Command Unit. I agreed in discussions with the Assembly that many of the aims of the Transport Operational Command Unit were similar to those of introducing more conductors. There are no plans to re-introduce conductors to any other bus routes. However, some extra conductors are required for increases in the level of service on routes using Routemaster vehicles. .
