Rainham Marshes are designated as a Site of Special Scientific Interest by English Nature. My draft London Plan will make it very clear that Rainham Marshes must be protected from development. There will be a policy stating that Sites of Special Scientific Interest and other sites of importance for nature conservation should be protected. Following a review of site designations, Rainham Marshes have been removed from the framework of Strategic Employment Sites in my draft London Plan. Boroughs must have regard to the London Plan policies when considering development proposals, and I will certainly follow these policies if a development that could have a detrimental effect on Rainham Marshes is referred to me. .
