Is the Mayor aware of, and if so of what, any provision that is being made either through PPP or the Mayor's scheme for financing the London Underground to upgrade Underground radio control for British Transport Police and the Metropolitan Police Service, in order to correct the anomaly whereby officers are isolated from radio contact with their control centre on Section 12 stations?

LUL has informed me that the Connect London Underground PFI project will provide radio communications within the entire underground network but especially in 12 Section locations (Section 12 Locations are generally completely enclosed stations). The Connect infrastructure will extend the coverage for British Transport Police and the London Fire Brigade and this will enable the system to meet the requirements of Fennel enquiry into the Kings Cross disaster. According to LUL, the project should provide adequate provision to accommodate the requirements of both the BTP and the London Fire Brigade. The Metropolitan Police and BTP have signed up to different Airwaves projects. These are not identical systems but are compatible. If you require further details I suggest you contact LUL directly. .
