Following the sad incident of a youth being killed surfing on a Croydon tram the coroner recommended fitting cameras so that tram drivers can see any such unfortunate activity. Could you advise me of the measures that have been taken to install such cameras?

The Coroner recommended that Tram track Croydon Ltd look into the feasibility of installing rearwards looking CCTV cameras on the trams with monitoring facilities in the drivers' cabs.TCL have spoken to a number of system suppliers to develop an acceptable specification for on tram CCTV. TCL have now provided a copy of the draft specification to Transport for London with a request for capital grant towards the cost of installing the system. This request is currently under consideration.Any such system has the potential to distract drivers whilst the tram is moving. Prior to its implementation, a full risk assessment will be required and its use agreed with the Health and Safety Executive and the Trade Union. Subject to the agreement of these bodies, TCL propose to undertake trial installations during the summer / early autumn 2002. .
