I have introduced Heritage Wardens onto the Squares. The purpose of the presence of the Wardens on the Squares is to increase safety for everyone, to act as a deterrent for damage on the Squares, and to act as a point of information.Since the introduction of the Heritage Wardens, there has been a 55% reduction in the levels of recorded crime in the Trafalgar Square area. The Heritage Wardens maintain a permanent presence on Trafalgar Square (24 hours a day 365 days a year) with the exception of New Years Eve when the Police are in control of the Square. There are regular checks of Parliament Square throughout the day every day, although due to lower visitor numbers a permanent presence is only maintained from May to September from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m and when specifically requested to be there by us.All the consultations which I have held with women and women's organisations have given the message that the presence of staff has a positive impact on how safe women feel in that environment. The proposal for a range of cultural events on Trafalgar Square in the summer months in particular, will increase the use of the Square, making it safer for everyone. .
