Question

Will he have made his decision before St. George's Day in time to take action before the local elections, when it would be effective to concentrate the Government's mind? Or are you once again going to let it slide, just as you did when you let Bob Kiley take the Chair of London Underground before the General Election to get you over the difficult bit so you don't have to be seen fighting a Labour Government, which you bloody well ought to be doing at this point?

I think I've got quite a good record of fighting this Government. It's not one of the things I'm usually considered deficient in and this issue is clearly going to be resolved before the borough elections and I think, if the Government decides to proceed with these contracts, it would be very damaging for Labour candidates in the borough elections. Fairly or unfairly, but it will.
