Question

Don't you think you are being a bit hypocritical regarding the Green Belt bearing in mind last week you gave permission against vast opposition for 15 acres of the Green Belt in Barnet to take a 10,000 seat stadium for Barnet Football Club, a club which regularly attracts a crowd of 1200. You know this really does undermine, does it not, everything else you say on the Green Belt when you allow an application such as that?

There is already a football stadium there, rather scrubby unpleasant football stadium backing onto people's gardens, which I think is not much fun for them. This is now going to be relocated so it isn't backing onto their gardens. More space will be available. Looked at objectively, it is exactly the sort of trade-off I think is acceptable in the Green Belt, that you restore some Green Belt in exchange for moving this and what you end up with is a better stadium. There is real pride in Barnet about their football club and it would be sad if they'd had to leave the borough or London.
