Question

: If it seems that you do not think there is any conflict of interest in having Lord Rogers as a member of your Advisory Cabinet on the one hand and a paid contractor of the authority on the other, may I take it that you would not see any conflict of interest in me being a member of the Assembly on the one hand and a paid legal advisor to you on legal proprieties, since it seems to me that you are clearly in need of one? [Laughter.] Isn't it obvious that, while you can consult on policy at one time and promote yourself as a Mayor at another, you should not be doing the same together at council tax payers' expense? Is that not a point that is entirely lost on you - in the same way as the point about the conflict with Lord Rogers?

Bear in mind I am a vehicle for the improvement of London.

Bob Neill: So is a dustcart. [Laughter.]

The Mayor: Raising that profile nationally and internationally, as with people like Giuliani, only benefits their city in the long term.
