Question

Considering the high levels of taxation Londoners have to endure, it is only right and proper that they should know what each pound of their hard-earned money is spent on. What was the exact amount of public money that the Mayor gave to Mr Bernard Rayner in exchange for his backing down over the pigeon feed dispute? .

Answer

The terms of the settlement agreement with Mr Rayner remain confidential. They did however expressly provide for me supplying the details in response to a question from the Assembly. I have therefore supplied the information to the Chair for circulation to members of the Assembly. I would hope that members will honour Mr Rayner's entitlement to confidentiality and agree that in view of the benefits of ceasing feed sales, the possible cost of litigation and the fact that Mr Rayner gave up a significant part of his livelihood, the settlement figure as supported by my in-house and external legal advisers was a reasonable one. .
