Question

I have received a number of expressions of concern from my constituents who in seeking to return home to South London on the bus find that the bridge is packed with fully laden buses taking up to twenty minutes to cross London Bridge, partly because of the road works at the southern end of the bridge. Is there any action that the GLA could take to encourage a solution to this problem? .

Separate streetworks on Duke Street Hill and St Thomas Street have had a significant impact on buses travelling across London Bridge. Passengers have experienced slow journeys and overcrowding as buses are delayed. The need to improve the control of streetworks in London is urgent and that is why this issue is specifically addressed in the Draft Transport Strategy. Three key proposals are: ? A streeworks taskforce to ensure effective co-ordination; ? Development of priority route plans to ensure activities are carried out at times of least impact; ? Investigation of options to encourage streetworks to be completed quickly and with minimum disruption.
