The many pressures for change in London have meant that difficult and unpopular decisions have to be made. No one regrets the downturn in the budget for road maintenance more than I do, but there is not the money available to meet all the demands. The state of the roads and pavements is often overlooked amongst other more high profile schemes, but I recognise that good quality maintenance is essential and can contribute positively to the lives of all Londoners. In this respect you will have noticed that it not only impinges on many aspects of the objectives in the draft Transport Strategy, but also merits a section to itself. I look forward to the budgets being restored and even increased to deal with the backlog of neglect through lack of funding over many years that we have inherited.
