Responsible Procurement means pioneering socially, environmentally and economically responsible procurement to deliver improved quality of life and better value for taxpayers, our people, our businesses and our City.
Our priority themes are:
Strategic Labour Needs and Training (SLNT)
Enables us to work closely with our suppliers by generating employment, skills and training opportunities, and then supporting our suppliers once contracts have been awarded by linking them in with the appropriate support, funding and government services.
London Living Wage (LLW)
There are now close to 200 employers in London who are committed to paying the Living Wage. We ensure that all direct and contracted staff receive at least the current London Living Wage rate. There are now some 3,400 London Living Wage beneficiaries working on our contracts.
Freight and Cycle Safety
We are committed to reducing the risk to cyclists posed by freight vehicles on London’s roads. As part of this commitment TfL has led the introduction of specific requirements for freight vehicles, particularly lorries into all contracts that require the movement of freight on London’s roads.
SMEs and Diverse Suppliers
London’s SMEs are vital to its economy. By opening up GLA contracts and supply chain opportunities, we can enable London’s small and diverse businesses to share in London’s successes.
To date have utilised CompeteFor to open up over 5,100 contracts to small and diverse businesses.
Equality and Diversity
The Mayor recognises Responsible Procurement as an important means of achieving his vision of ‘Equal Life Chances For All’. Part of this vision includes ensuring the GLA Group’s procurement process is open to all, including SMEs and diverse suppliers. We also want to work with suppliers who share our values and vision for equality and diversity.
Key areas spanning activity in this wide ranging theme of promoting greater environmental sustainability include; energy and resource efficient goods and services such as the RE:FIT project, waste minimisation, low carbon fleet vehicles, fair trade and organic food and drink, reducing carbon dioxide and other green house gas emissions, procuring sustainable timber and assuring the environmental management practices of our suppliers.
We are committed to ensuring workers in our supply chains are treated fairly, equitably and humanely and to encourage suppliers to consider labour conditions when they are sourcing goods. We have joined Sedex (the Suppliers Ethical Data Exchange) to monitor labour conditions through our contracts, and TfL has joined the Ethical Trading Initiative (ETI) in order to ensure best practice in the procurement of uniforms.
