Publication from Dr Fiona Twycross: Londoners on Brexit report – The survey results

The results of my Brexit survey are in and Londoners have overwhelmingly responded with a demand for a deal. I have now released my report, Londoners on Brexit: Discontent and the need for a deal which focuses on the need for the Government to start listening to Londoners, both residents and businesses, and work towards securing a deal that that does not jeopardise London’s economy.

The report found that:

  • Two-thirds (65%) of Londoners reject the Prime Minister’s claim that ‘no deal is better than a bad deal’
  • Almost 80% of Londoners, including half of leave voters, are not happy with how negotiations are proceeding
  • Two-thirds (65%) of Londoners want a ‘soft Brexit’
  • 60% of Londoners support a second referendum, including 1 in 5 leave voters

It was clear from the responses that there is real discontent amongst Londoners about the way Brexit negotiations are proceeding. Londoners have been clear that they would like to see more transparency over the negations, an option to have their say on the final deal and some reassurance to the thousands of EU nationals living in our city. The report therefore recommends:

  • The option of a vote on the outcome of the negotiations should be considered by the Government to enable the public to have a further say in their future.
  • The Government should provide regular and simple updates of the outcomes of discussions with the EU and be clearer on the aims they have for the negotiation.
  • The Government should provide all EU nationals residing in the UK with firm guarantees of their right to remain after Brexit.
