Housing and Regeneration Committee

Purpose of committee

The Housing and Regeneration Committee is tasked with examining the Mayor's considerable responsibilities for delivering more affordable homes in London, improving the quality of existing housing, meeting Londoners' housing needs and promoting opportunities for mobility across the capital.  It pays particular attention to how the Mayor's housing strategy is being implemented and how the Mayor is delivering on his promise to provide 54,500 new affordable homes by 2015.

 

The Committee also monitors the Mayor's regeneration functions.  These include how he is spending more than £100 million on specific funding regeneration projects; his powers through the London Plan, which are being used to promote particular areas for regeneration, and the operation of his new Mayoral Development Corporation that covers the Olympic Park.

 

The Committee is currently investigating London's private rented housing sector with specific reference to ways of expanding the supply of private rented homes (as part of a drive to increase overall new housing supply in London), improving the management of sector and making an impact in terms of achieving higher property standards and more secure and affordable tenancies for Londoners.

 

Future projects will feature: reviewing London's housing associations, the Olympic Park's long term regeneration plans and how council housing is serving Londoners.
