The Mayor's Draft Health Inequalities Strategy

Part A:

 

The Assembly will receive an opening statement from the Mayor regarding his draft Health Inequalities Strategy.

 

Part B:

 

The Assembly will receive an opening statement from the Chair of the Health Committee regarding the Committee’s response to the consultation on the draft Health Inequalities Strategy.

 

Part C:

 

The Assembly is recommended to receive and, in accordance with Section 42B of the Greater London Authority Act 1999 (as amended), consider its response to the Draft Health Inequalities Strategy and determine whether to use its power to reject the draft strategy.

 

The Assembly will put questions to Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London.

 

Part D:

 

Motion submitted in the name of the Chairman:

 

“That the Assembly notes the Draft Health Inequalities Strategy.”

Minutes:

Part A:

 

4.1  The Chairman explained that the principal purpose of the meeting was for the Assembly formally to receive and, in accordance with Section 42B of the Greater London Authority Act 1999 (as amended), consider its response to the Mayor’s Draft Health Inequalities Strategy.

 

4.2  The Assembly put questions to the following guests in relation to the Draft Health Inequalities Strategy:

 

·  Sadiq Khan, Mayor of London;

·  Professor Yvonne Doyle CB, Statutory Health Advisor to the Mayor; and

·  Dr Tom Coffey OBE, Senior Mayoral Health Advisor.

 

4.3  The Mayor made an opening statement, the transcript of which is attached at Appendix 1.

 

Part B:

 

4.4  Dr Onkar Sahota AM, as Chair of the Health Committee, presented the Committee’s formal response to the Draft Health Inequalities Strategy, the transcript of which is attached at Appendix 2.

 

Part C:

 

4.5  A transcript of the question and answer session is attached at Appendix 3.

 

4.6  During the course of the question and answer session the following commitments were made:

 

·  The Mayor undertook to look at the Health Inequalities Strategy Implementation Plan with a view to examining how much progress was being made in relation to the provision of more green spaces;

·  The Mayor undertook to examine the possibility of having a Champion for people with dementia and to support the work being done to make London the first dementia-friendly capital;

·  Professor Doyle CB, undertook to provide the measures by which the effectiveness of monies being invested in programmes to address health inequalities was being assessed; and

·  Dr Coffey OBE stated that he would be happy to meet with relevant groups, such as the Hepatitis C Trust, to discuss better treatment of, and screening for, hepatitis C.


 

 

Part D:

 

4.7  The Chairman moved the motion set out on the agenda in his name, namely:

 

“That the Assembly notes the Draft Health Inequalities Strategy”

 

which was seconded by Dr Onkar Sahota AM.

 

The motion was agreed with 13 votes in favour and no votes against.

 

4.8  Under the provisions of Section 42B of the GLA Act 1999 (as amended), the Assembly was deemed to have not rejected the Mayor’s draft Health Inequalities Statement.
