The London Borough of Newham was formed from the former Essex county boroughs of West Ham and East Ham. It is in the heart of east London and is one of the most diverse places in the country, with more than 200 dialects spoken.
Newham was one of the six host boroughs for the 2012 Summer Olympics and contains most of the Olympic Park, including the Olympic Stadium. The borough is also home to London City Airport, The Siemens Crystal, Westfield Stratford City and the Excel Exhibition Centre.
The borough is undergoing a rapid transformation with some of the largest regeneration schemes in the country. These include the revitalisation of the Royals Docks and the International Quarter in Stratford.
