Mayor of London presents Christmas on Trafalgar Square 2013

5 December 2013 to 22 December 2013

This event has already taken place

From early December until the New Year, come and celebrate the festive season in London’s iconic Trafalgar Square.

Christmas Tree lights flashing

Christmas on Trafalgar Square starts with the lighting of the world famous Christmas Tree on 5 December. The tree comes from Norway, a historic tradition that’s happened every year since 1947.

On 8 December, you can join a torchlit procession for the Blessing of the Crib at the steps of St Martin-in-the-Fields. Designed by Tomaki Suzuki, the crib will be on display throughout December. Get more information on the St Martin-in-the-Fields website.

Finally from 9-22 December, there’ll be Carol Singing beneath the tree. More than 50 groups will be taking part, with performances from 16.00-20.00 on weekdays and from 14.00-18.00 on weekends. View the full carol singing programme.

For carol singers

The carol singing programme for Christmas 2013 runs from Monday 9 – Sunday 22 December, excluding Saturday 14 December 2013.

Due to the popularity of the programme we are no longer accepting booking forms at this time. Please email trafalgar.square@london.gov.uk if you have a group that would like to do carol singing on the square as we may have a slot become available.

Information on the programme

The GLA provides one-hour slots for groups to use for carol singing at the base of the Christmas Tree in Trafalgar Square. This year the GLA will be returning the square to a more traditional form of carol singing therefore a PA system and stage will not be provided and you are requested not to bring your own. The idea is to create a more intimate and enjoyable experience, for both the carol singers and the audience, which is more suitable to Trafalgar Square at Christmas time. The slots provided should not be used for anything other than traditional carol singing.

You may collect on behalf of a registered charity for the duration of your hour’s slot. Please note that the GLA has no means to guard or protect charity collection buckets, and groups must make appropriate arrangements for collection and storage.

Groups may bring a keyboard or similar instrument to act as accompaniment to singers, no further instruments are permitted, however this may occasionally be restricted in order that services and events at nearby St Martin-in-the-Fields Church are not disturbed. Please note there will be no access to power.

The slots are for one hour only from 16.00 to 19.00 weekdays (with the last slot finishing at 20.00) and from 14.00 to 17.00 Saturday and Sunday (with the last slot finishing at 18.00). There are no slots on Saturday 14 December 2013.

Please note: bookings are only accepted for confirmed groups, we cannot accept bookings from charities who do not already have confirmed groups.
