Why should I wear a cloth face covering?
There is some scientific evidence that shows that cloth face coverings may help reduce the chances of an individual unknowingly infecting other people with coronavirus (COVID-19). COVID-19 can be spread directly by droplets from coughs, sneezes and speaking. Wearing a face mask is therefore primarily intended to help protect the people around you, slowing the spread of the virus.
People with coronavirus symptoms, as well as all members of their household, should continue to follow the advice to self-isolate and stay at home.
Face coverings should be used in enclosed spaces where social distancing (staying 2 metres away from others) is not always possible, and you come into contact with people you would not normally meet. For example, on public transport or in some shops. There are certain people who should not wear a face covering.
