Explore Your Horizons: Speed Networking and Work Skills Event 2017
On 19 October 2017, 260 excited young people from 19 schools descended on Lord’s Cricket Ground to meet with 190 business volunteers, at an inspirational speed networking event called Explore Your Horizons: Speed Networking and Work Skills Event 2017.
The event was delivered by Team London as part of the London Enterprise Adviser Network, a programme that helps prepare young people for the world of work by connecting businesses with London schools.
The event gave young and often under-represented Londoners the chance to meet with employers, find out about their careers and learn aspects of their day-to-day work. They each spent four minutes with their business volunteers, who advised and educated in this fun and informal setting.
The day was a great success! A hugely varied range of businesses were in attendance, all eager to help motivate and inspire. Helping the event were thirteen event volunteers from local colleges, all of whom did an amazing job. One event volunteer, Nicole, said
Not only did the event benefit the young people that participated, it also benefited me. I met hundreds of ambitious, amazing young people and as a result I now realise so much which could potentially open many doors for me in the future.
The outcome was positive, with great feedback from business and event volunteers and students alike. And of course, Team London couldn't have been happier either, with everyone impressed by the well-mannered, animated and optimistic young people who had attended.
The event can truly be summed up by a response from one articulate young person. When asked what the most valuable thing she had learnt, she explained,
I’m overwhelmed with such valuable information that I feel like I have a clearer view of my future.
Team London couldn't have hoped for a better answer.
