An open letter to the next Mayor has been published today by the London Assembly Education Panel.

The letter insists that London’s incoming Mayor must “seize the moment” at the start of the new mayoral term to re-shape the capital’s Further Education sector. This is necessary to better meet the needs of both students and businesses.

The Panel investigated the current and future state of London’s FE sector and examined a number of challenges and changes the sector is facing:

  • The impact of the reduction in Government funding over the last five years.
  • The Government sponsored Area Review – for which the Mayor will Chair the pan-London steering group - and what issues it will consider.
  • How devolving control of the adult skills budget to the Greater London Authority by 2019 might improve the quality and sustainability of the FE sector.

Following this assessment, the Panel recognises that the start of the new mayoralty will mark a pivotal moment for the capital’s FE sector and as such this should be a top priority if the sector is to succeed in the years to come.
