10 March 2021 | The Black Curriculum Teacher CPD: Resource Launch

In October 2020, the Mayor announced a partnership with The Black Curriculum to lead an expert review of all three of the London Curriculum's KS3 history units: 'World City', 'Social Reform in Victorian London' and 'London at War'. These refreshed units are now available to download, enabling you to embed Black History across the academic year.

The Black Curriculum hosted a teacher CPD webinar to discuss how the resources have been enhanced and the reasons for this. The recording below will help you feel supported and confident in teaching Black British histories, and embedding racial literacy across curriculum practices. Whilst the resources are KS3, there are insights all teachers will find helpful and our resources can easily be adapted for primary pupils.

16 Oct 2020 | Careers with Impact: Meet the Programmers who #CodeTheWorld | Live Event

Many people associate computing with phones, games or a subject in school. But did you know that it also plays a big part in transport, healthcare, environment, sustainability, education and human rights?

This Ada Lovelace Day, you will get the chance to hear from real-life programmers and computer scientists who #CodeTheWorld on a daily basis and ask them your questions. What do they really do? Can they make the world a better place? And how can you become one?

The slides and a recording from this session are available below.

12 Oct 2020 | Breaking the Gender Barriers in Computing | Ada Lovelace Day CPD

A significant gender gap exists in computing at schools, with more boys than girls pursuing computing-related subjects at both GCSE and A-level, with the result that fewer women than men go on to work in the computing and digital technology sectors. How can teachers of computing help remove the barriers girls face in computing?

The session explored the social and cultural barriers to participation in computing and offer strategies to encourage more girls to participate in computing, both in primary and secondary.

The slides and a recording from this session are available below.

23 September 2020 | Teaching Science Through English and Maths - Primary Teacher CPD

Following the disruption to children’s education caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, the Government stated that, for pupils in Key Stages 1 and 2 in the coming year:

“School leaders are expected to prioritise identifying gaps and re-establish good progress in the essentials (phonics and reading, increasing vocabulary, writing and mathematics)”.

To achieve this, time for teaching the Science curriculum may get squeezed. However, the Government’s guidance also requires that

“the majority of pupils are taught a full range of subjects over the year, including sciences”.

This webinar explored how primary teachers can integrate aspects of the Science curriculum into English and Maths to create the time to teach all three core subjects.

A recording and slides from the session are available below.

8 July 2020 | Re-building Pupils' Practical and Enquiry Skills in Secondary Science | CPD webinar

During school closures most pupils will have had little opportunity to engage in practical science. How can teachers give pupils a boost in developing these skills and increase their confidence in refining and applying them? In this session, we discussed what next year's secondary science curriculum could look like with a focus on building pupils' confidence in practical and enquiry skills.

The slides from the event are available below. Unfortunately something went wrong during the recording of the event, so this is not available.

24 June 2020 | Careers with Impact: Meet the Engineers who #ShapeTheWorld | Live Event

What do engineers do? How can they make the world a better place? At this live careers event, students got the chance to hear from real-life engineers who #ShapeTheWorld on a daily basis and ask them anything they were wondering about engineering.

The slides from the event are available below. A video recording of the event will be available here shortly.

17 June 2020 | Key Stage 3 Computing for Non-Specialist Teachers: CPD Webinar

Computing is a national curriculum foundation subject and a vital aspect of a broad and balanced curriculum for all learners. This webinar allowed new or existing teachers of Key Stage 3 computing to explore the subject knowledge required to teach the Key Stage 3 programme of study.

A recording and slides from the session are available below.

20 May 2020 | Differentiating Effectively in Science: Primary Teacher Webinar

During school closures, children will have had very different learning experiences, so the future teaching of science topics is going to require even more careful assessment of prior learning and differentiation where gaps in learning are identified.

This webinar looked at how to translate the results of assessment of learning into effective differentiated teaching to support all learners to achieve the expected outcomes.

A recording and the slides from the session are available below.

13 May 2020 | Intro to Primary Computing: CPD webinar for Primary Teachers

Computing is a practical and creative subject covering computer science, information technology (IT), and digital literacy. It encourages invention and resourcefulness, and the ideas of computing are applied to understanding systems and creating products for the real world.

Primary school computing focuses on helping pupils to build foundational skills such as computational thinking, and gain an understanding of the technological world in which they live.

This webinar explored the computing curriculum for Key Stage 1 and 2 in England and the support, resources and free CPD that is available for teachers and schools.

A recording and the slides from the session are available below.

22 April 2020 | Plan now. Assess later? CPD webinar for Primary Science Teachers

As a result of the closure of schools due to coronavirus, we know that most children will have lost months of teaching. Some children will have been supported at home to continue to learn, and others not, resulting in a greater than usual disparity between children and gaps in prior learning that will need to be addressed by teachers when schools reopen.

Now is a good time for schools and teachers to start to think about whether their current planning meets the requirements of the National Curriculum and the particular needs of the pupils in their schools. Assessment is a critical part of this. This session provided teachers with advice on how to do this successfully and some resources that might help with the task.

A recording and the slides from the session are available below.

23 March 2020 | Primary Teacher CPD: Supporting child-led science investigations

A central aim of primary science education is to nurture children so that they become independent, self-motivated scientists. An essential part of this is giving children opportunities to take the lead in their own learning and ask questions that they are interested in and know about. Letting go and allowing children to make decisions about what and how they investigate can be daunting, however it shouldn't be scary if we manage it well.

This CPD webinar shared best practice and aimed to help teachers support children to develop their own questions that they have the capacity to investigate and share with others.

A recording and slides from the session are available below.
