Although wearing a face covering is no longer mandatory it is one of the most important things someone can do to protect themselves and others against COVID-19.

Londoners should continue to consider wearing a face covering in crowded or enclosed spaces where the virus can spread more easily, including on TfL services where face coverings are strongly recommended.

Why wear a face covering?

Face coverings help by catching the small droplets we sometimes spread when we talk or cough. These can contain coronavirus (COVID-19) and land on surfaces and other people. If you have COVID-19, even without any symptoms, and are not wearing a face covering the risk of spreading it to others nearby can be as high as 70%. If you wear a face covering, the risk of spreading it drops significantly.

Choosing a face covering

Face coverings with multiple layers and which fit closely around the face work best. A face covering should:

  • Cover your nose and mouth, whilst allowing you to breathe comfortably (a nose wire may help with fit)
  • Be made of a material that you find comfortable and breathable, such as cotton
  • Ideally include at least 2 layers of fabric. 3 layers is even better
  • Fit comfortably but securely against the side of the face
  • Be secured to the head with adjustable ties or ear loops

A face visor or shield only provides limited protection compared to a face covering. This is because they do not adequately cover the nose and mouth, and do not filter airborne particles.
