Danny Care

Danny CareDanny Care was born in Leeds and currently plays at scrum-half for Harlequins in the Guinness Premiership. Danny played football for three years at Sheffield Wednesday before choosing rugby as his main sport.

You were a successful all-round sportsman when you were growing up. What advice and encouragement would you give to young people?

Sport has always been a massive part of my life. I owe a lot to my parents. From an early age they encouraged me to do as many sports as possible and just go out and enjoy myself. They always pushed me to keep going and not give up. I would encourage any young person to try as many sports as they can as I think there is always one you might really like. Even if you don’t take it seriously, you should keep playing if you enjoy it.

How would you respond to people who say that rugby is a man’s game and that people with a smaller build cannot play rugby?

I wouldn’t agree. Women’s rugby is really picking up and getting more popular and deservedly so. Anyone can play rugby, regardless of his or her shape or size. You can see that with the big guys at the front (props) and how they get away with it right through to some of the smaller guys, like me, who try to run away from the big guys. Rugby is a game for anyone and anyone can enjoy it.

How do you feel about the possibly winning your first cap for the senior England side?

I was delighted when I heard the news about the call-up. I’m just really looking forward to going to New Zealand and seeing what it has to offer and experiencing everything I can. If I do get my first cap, there are not really many better places to achieve it. It would be amazing to face the haka - especially on New Zealand turf.

Which other sport star outside of rugby inspired you to get involved in sport?

I’m a Liverpool fan, so a player like Steven Gerrard is someone I really look up to. I admire the sort of drive and determination he gives, week in week out. I’m also a big fan of David Beckham. I like the way he conducts himself as a player.

If there was one sporting event you could go to, which one would it be and why?

Obviously I would love to play in a rugby world cup final, but also scoring the winning goal in a football world cup final would be quite nice too!
