Personal safety
Safe travel in London
Taxis
Only black cabs can be hailed in the streets. If a minicab driver approaches you in the street, he (or she) is breaking the law and may not be a taxi driver. There have
been many sexual assaults and rapes associated with illegal minicabs, so you should always use a licensed taxi firm. Travel with a friend, if possible and sit in the back.
If you can, find a local firm that you can use regularly.
To find a licensed minicab firm in your area, see the Transport for London website.
To find out more about safer ways to travel by taxi, see the Safer Travel At Night campaign.
Buses, trains and tubes
Public transport is generally very safe, but it is worth following a few simple guidelines.
- Make sure you know where you are getting off.
- When waiting for a bus or train, use a bus stop or station which is well lit and used by lots of people, if possible.
- Be aware of where the emergency alarms are and sit or stand near them.
- Check the departure times of last buses, tubes or trains.
- Take extra money so that you can take another bus or train or ring for a lift if you get stranded.
Use the Transport for London Journey Planner to plan your route in advance.
