Rubbish and recycling

Get involved

If you want to do more about London’s growing waste problem, the best place to start is by making sure you recycle as much as you can at home.

See the Recycle for London website for information on your local facilities and services.

Your local borough will also have information on recycling services – find the London boroughs’ websites.

You can also think about how you might recycle more at school. To get your school more involved in the issue, there are a number of organisations that provide schools packs.

The national Recycle More campaign includes a schools section:

Alupro (the UK Aluminium Packaging Recycling Organisation) can help your school increase recycling – and raise money by doing so.

The Green Choices website has ways to help live a greener life, and includes a schools section:

Taking it further

If you are really passionate about recycling, there are a number of ways you can get involved in setting up or improving your local recycling facilities. Some London boroughs recruit local volunteers as ‘recycling champions’, to help people in their area recycle more. See the borough websites for more information.

You could also set up a local composting collection, with the help of the Community Composting Network.

Sign up for a residential course or environmental holiday with the Young People’s Trust for the Environment. They can also provide speakers to visit your school.

Make sure you stay on top of the facts. United Nations Environment Programme website includes a magazine for young people.
