Climate change and pollution

Climate change in London

As a major world city, London needs to tackle its emissions of greenhouse gases. However, it needs to address issues like energy sourcing and use and green transport options while still considering the need for jobs and economic growth in the capital.

To find out what climate change means for London, including how temperatures would change over the next 50 years and what this would mean for life in the city, you can read the report, London’s Warming, commissioned by the London Climate Change Partnership.

London’s air quality
The pollution in London’s air comes from many different sources – from traffic, from building sites, the smoke from a fire. Sometimes you can see it or smell it, sometimes you can’t.

The pollution in London’s air has led to an estimated 1,600 premature deaths. It affects the lungs and airways, and can impact on the heart. Those most at risk are the very young and the very old, and people with existing heart and lung problems.

Find out more about London’s air quality from the London Air Quality Network, which has a comprehensive range of statistics and reports on the subject.
