Getting around London

Free Bus Fares

Under 16s

If you are under 16 in London you can get free travel on buses and trams. This is a fantastic opportunity for young people to travel free at any time on buses and trams, and across the entire London bus network, including sections outside Greater London.

Zip is the new name for Oyster photocards for young people, and from 1 June 2008 all 11-15 year olds will need a valid Oyster photocard to travel free on buses and trams. If you already have one, you don't need to replace it, just use it until the date runs out.

All 11-15 year-olds must have a valid Child, 14-15 or 11-15 Oyster photocard to get free travel on buses and trams and some child-rate travel on the Tube, DLR and London Overground.

You can apply for the 11-15 Oyster photocard as long as you were under 16 on 31 August prior to the start of the academic year.

You and your parent/guardian will need to fill out an application form available from Post Offices TM in Greater London and this may then take up to 2 weeks to be processed after you return it. For more information, pick up or download a Travel discounts for children, teenagers and students.

16 - 18 year olds

It can be tough having enough cash to get about as a teenager. That’s why if you are aged 16 to 17 there are even more reasons to love Oyster.

The Mayor and Transport for London (TfL) have introduced free travel on buses and tram with a 16 to 17 Oyster photocard for 16 to 18 year olds in full-time education who live in a London borough.

Londoners aged over 16 and under 19 on the 31 August prior to the start of the academic year who are in qualifying full time education or on a work-based learning scheme can travel for free on buses and trams across the entire London bus network, including sections outside Greater London.

Zip is the new name for Oyster photocards for young people, and from September the cards will have a new look. If you already have one, you don't need to replace it, just use it until it expires. 16-18 year-olds must have a valid 16+ Oyster photocard to get free travel on buses and trams.

16-17 year-olds who are not resident in London or not in full time education must have a valid 16+ or 16-17 Oyster photocard to travel at half the adult rate on buses, trams, the Tube, DLR and London Overground.

More information and how to apply is available on the Transport for London website. You can also pick up or download a Travel discounts for children, teenagers and students leaflet.

Behaviour Code

If you are using an Oyster photocard with travel concession on one of our services, it may be withdrawn if you:

  • do not follow TfL`s Behaviour Code or
  • commit a crime on one of our vehicles.

The Behaviour Code will be in your Oyster photocard wallet.

Over 18s

An 18+ Student Oyster photocard offers students the opportunity to spend less on travel in and around London.

The scheme has been developed by Transport for London (TfL) and National Rail (NR), with the support of the University of London Union, the National Union of Students and education establishments in London.

An 18+ Student Oyster photocard entitles the holder to buy Student-rate Travelcards and Bus Passes valid for 7 days, one month or longer periods of up to one year, which cost 30 per cent less than adult-rate season tickets. Money can also be added to an 18+ Student Oyster photocard to pay as you go using adult-rate Oyster single fares, which are cheaper than paying cash.

More information is available on the Transport for London website.
