Mayor says ‘Time for Action’ on youth crime
Mayor Boris Johnson has launched a new action plan to help tackle the root causes of youth crime.
‘Time for Action’ details six key projects that the Mayor will work on with other organisations. These are:
- Supporting young people in custody so that they have options beyond a life of crime.
- Dealing effectively with truancy and helping young people to stay in education.
- Offering extra support to children in care, improving education in deprived inner city areas and helping those who leave
school at 16 develop the skills they need for a successful career.
- Helping young people to build character and take responsibility, working with organisations such as the Scouts, Girl
Guides and Police Cadets.
- Giving young people more opportunities in sport, as well as music and the arts.
- Making sure that the initiatives that work best are put into practice across London, by building a central ‘library’ of information.
The Mayor said: My action plan will provide the Londonwide leadership and co-ordination that has so far been absent in tackling
youth crime.
We must also do much more to give all children a decent start in life. That means better parenting, more work to address truancy and more opportunities for young people to develop their character and through education and sporting activities.
