When home is stressful

When you think about your family, do you:

a) feel warm and fuzzy inside?
b) think about fighting with your bro/sis?
c) wish you'd been given a better deal?
d) feel that your family does quite a good job?

There's no right answer - and most people feel differently from one day to the next.

The 'perfect family' doesn't exist. All families are different and go through both happy and sad times. Things can be difficult if your mum and dad don't get on; if there's illness in the family, or if a parent loses their job.

If difficult times do come, here are some pointers that can help you through:

  • do let on how you're feeling: it can really help you cope with being sad or angry
  • don't go it alone or bottle up your feelings: as well as telling someone, you could write all your thoughts in a diary
  • do arrange to do things that you know will cheer you up or take your mind off the situation for a while. It could be playing football, arranging a cinema trip or staying over at a friend's house.
